ESCALATE: Talawa and Nottingham Playhouse

Find out how this Autumn's ESCALATE workshops went ...

Earlier this year Talawa Theatre Company and Nottingham Playhouse created a new opportunity ESCALATE: a six-week development programme for Black creatives in the East Midlands led by Nottingham artists Rachael Young and Mia Johnson.

From September through to October, ESCALATE offered an opportunity to collaborate build a creative toolkit and explore the kind of work they wanted to make and/or re-imagine the work they were already making.

These workshops were attended by:

Callum J fuller
Sarah Kolawole
Marlon Smith
Narisha Lawson
Gavin Gordon
Michelle Hubbard
Naomi Obeng
Sharon White
Honey Williams

In spring 2018 Talawa and Graeae delivered a series of workshops with the aim of building a collective of artists who identified as Black D/deaf and disabled.

This was an opportunity for artists at different stages in their career to come together to play, explore and develop their work.

The six workshops were delivered by a range of different artists including Michael Buffong, Jenny Sealy, Matilda Ibini, Somalia Seaton, Azara Meghi, Amit Sharma and Dan Bailey.

The success of these workshops called for an opportunity to share the work artists had been working on.

Talawa programmed their Take Over event at our annual new works festival Talawa Firsts.
